Chapter 1: The Beginning of My Jiu-Jitsu Journey
Jiu-Jitsu has significantly enhanced my life, making each day better than the last, and there's no turning back.
On April 9, 2021, I stepped into a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu academy for the first time. To be honest, my motivation to join stemmed from knowing someone already involved in the sport. Starting Jiu-Jitsu alone is something I genuinely respect. The atmosphere was warm as they handed me paperwork that humorously implied I would be enduring some rough treatment without any repercussions.
Surviving my first class felt like a major accomplishment, especially as I sensed they were gentle with me. After this trial session, I decided to commit by signing up for a membership, completely unaware of the journey that awaited me.
The biggest leap in my Jiu-Jitsu adventure is often the very first step through those doors, marking the transition from an everyday person to a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. However, becoming Brazilian is not a perk of starting training. I can vividly recall the sensation of wearing my gi for the first time, and I see that same uncertainty mirrored in new students who come and go.
Adjusting to this new environment has been a unique experience, and I’m grateful for my ability to adapt. This brings me to the first significant advantage of practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Benefit #1: Adaptability
Adapting is essential in both Jiu-Jitsu and life. The ability to make small adjustments can lead to significant outcomes. A slight shift in a challenging position can be pivotal for escaping, sweeping, or submitting an opponent, whether on the mat or in daily life.
Remember, whenever you feel stuck, a simple adjustment might be all that's needed to move forward—a lesson I’ve learned through Jiu-Jitsu.
After approximately 75 days of training, I earned my first promotion: a stripe on my white belt. This achievement felt like a hard-fought victory, teaching me the value of embracing challenges.
The blue mats in the academy are intimidating, resembling an ocean filled with metaphorical sharks, and here I am, willingly diving into the deep end.
Benefit #2: Perseverance
I refer to the latter part of class as the "shark tank," a playful term I use with friends. This is where I challenge upper belts to roll with me, pushing myself to endure while often feeling overwhelmed. Although it may seem somewhat masochistic, this experience drives me to persevere.
I've previously defined perseverance as the determination to continue despite difficulties, which holds true even when training against more experienced opponents. While my performance might not always shine, I find that overcoming tougher challenges prepares me for lighter competition.
As I gained more experience, I noticed improvements in my submissions and my ability to remain calm in tense situations. Staying composed while under pressure is a crucial skill, and Jiu-Jitsu has taught me that composure is vital in both struggle and success.
Benefit #3: Composure
Just last week, while training with another white belt, I successfully advanced my position. I heard my instructor remind me to "stay calm and keep your composure." This was a pivotal moment for me, as composure has always been a challenge.
Jiu-Jitsu has shown me the importance of maintaining calmness, whether facing triumph or adversity. As of December 2021, I proudly wear two stripes on my white belt, a symbol of my progress after eight months of training.
The more I train, the more I understand that there will always be someone more skilled or stronger than me, motivating me to continually improve. The "shark tank" keeps me grounded; in this environment, you either evolve into a shark or get consumed.
Benefit #4: Humility
Two moments stand out in my journey when I truly grasped the concept of humility. One occurred recently when I sparred with a formidable blue belt. While in a challenging position, I accidentally kneed him in the face. The immediate fear I felt was palpable.
Despite my concern for him, he insisted we continue. Soon after, he submitted me with a swift Kimura lock, leaving me humbled. This experience reinforced the importance of humility in Jiu-Jitsu, where egos can easily inflate during competition.
Jiu-Jitsu has deepened my understanding of emotional intelligence, providing a unique perspective on competition.
Benefit #5: Emotional Intelligence
Tensions often escalate during physical confrontations. Even as a trained individual, I experience the adrenaline rush before a sparring session. A close friend frequently provokes me outside the gym to challenge me to roll, causing me to feel anxious.
Training in Jiu-Jitsu has equipped me with the emotional intelligence to stay composed in such situations. I’ve noticed an improvement in my adaptability, perseverance, composure, and humility—crucial aspects of emotional intelligence.
I could elaborate endlessly on how Jiu-Jitsu has transformed my life and what further lessons await me. The more individuals who begin training, the better.
So, what can Jiu-Jitsu do for you? It has already done so much for me...
Now, let's get rolling in Jiu-Jitsu!
