Navigating the Emotional Ups and Downs of Entrepreneurship

Chapter 1: The Emotional Landscape of Entrepreneurship
Many discussions around entrepreneurship tend to highlight the triumphs, while the struggles are often overlooked. Each day brings a new wave of feelings as I embark on this journey. One day, I might feel elated about a new opportunity, and the next, I'm filled with doubt and hesitation. This emotional flux is a constant companion, and I'm not sure how much longer I can endure it.
My Entrepreneurial Experience
For several years, I've embraced the entrepreneurial lifestyle. Initially, I was fully invested in online ventures—content creation, coaching, and teaching—where I dictated my schedule. However, while I continue this path, my primary source of income comes from a large childcare facility that my partner and I took over from my mother-in-law a few years ago.
Surprisingly, I've found joy in managing a brick-and-mortar establishment. There’s something fulfilling about discussing a concrete service with inherent value. We provide something essential—childcare—so it’s just a matter of aligning pricing and availability. It’s straightforward, yet traditional businesses often get overshadowed by the allure of the 'solopreneur lifestyle.' In reality, how many solopreneurs achieve sustainable income?
Our New Venture
If you're familiar with the childcare sector, you know it often faces criticism due to high costs and lengthy waitlists. Having worked in this area, I understand the challenges firsthand. Finding a suitable commercial space for a thriving childcare center is almost impossible. You need ample room for classrooms and a spacious outdoor area for playgrounds. How many commercially-zoned properties in your area meet these criteria?
When my partner and I found an affordably priced property ideal for childcare, we jumped at the chance. After two years of bidding wars, we finally received an accepted offer.
Due Diligence
Currently, we’re meticulously evaluating the property to ensure it aligns with our needs before lifting the contract conditions. This phase is particularly taxing on my emotions. I swing between excitement—“This is the best decision ever!”—to sheer panic—“What if the bank denies our loan?” The latter thought weighs heavily on me; we might be set on this property, but the bank's approval is uncertain. A denial would be devastating.
I remind myself that every experience serves a purpose, and I’ll eventually understand why things unfold as they do. Yet, at this moment, my heart feels heavy. I’m riding the emotional rollercoaster of entrepreneurship, striving to maintain a positive outlook.
The upcoming weeks promise to be pivotal and transformative. If all goes according to plan, we’ll be expanding our business and relocating to a new town. I find myself cautiously optimistic and nervously hopeful.
With warmth,
Megan
