A Heartfelt Thank You to My Past Self for the Journey

Chapter 1: The Importance of Self-Gratitude
Writing a letter of appreciation to oneself can serve as a powerful therapeutic method, encouraging a fresh perspective on life experiences. I often recommend this exercise to my therapy clients who may benefit from adopting a more positive viewpoint. Practicing what I advocate, I’ve penned my own thank you letter.
Dear Jackie,
This letter is a heartfelt expression of appreciation for the considerable effort you've invested throughout the years.
Recently, I stumbled upon a journal from 2021, filled with sticky notes and insights. Each note addressed challenging religious experiences that you navigated. It took a year of dedicated journaling to process all those thoughts.
That was quite an undertaking, but I'm thankful you persevered. You’ve managed to approach discussions about religion without it feeling overwhelming.
There are numerous other accomplishments for which I hold deep gratitude. You took the courageous step of beginning therapy. When the first therapist wasn't a good fit, you sought another. You devoted considerable time and resources to this journey. For over two years, you woke up an hour early to journal and reflect.
You even made evening trips to coffee shops, diving into books on psychological development. It’s astonishing how many books you’ve read in the past five years! You not only read them but also highlighted key points and took notes, revisiting those sections for further reflection.
It’s hard to fathom the extent of your efforts. Just within the last year, you've written numerous essays to articulate your thoughts on autism, private practice, and much more.
Since 2014, you've achieved so much that seems almost unbelievable. Balancing a full-time job, volunteering, and attending graduate school simultaneously is no small feat. Sometimes, I can't help but marvel at the richness of life today, all thanks to your diligence.
While I recognize your hard work, I also believe in the role of divine guidance and serendipitous moments. There was an unseen force that led you to the right resources and support at crucial times.
Of course, the journey was not without its share of painful experiences. I’m proud of you for recognizing what wasn’t serving you and choosing to walk away.
I am immensely thankful for all you’ve accomplished. Your efforts have paved the way for the freedom, creativity, space, and love I now enjoy. It’s hard to believe you may not have been able to envision this life; you only caught glimpses of it.
So, I want to reassure you that every challenge was worthwhile. If someone had predicted that it would take nearly eight years to feel better, you would have likely felt overwhelmed. You hoped for a quicker resolution, maybe within a year or two.
As you faced your challenges, you unearthed even more. Releasing old habits and adopting new ways of living required time, and now, in hindsight, it all falls into place.
If I could go back in time, I wouldn’t reveal the arduous journey ahead. I wouldn’t want to deter you. You did what was necessary and continued onward.
As I frequently remind my therapy clients, “It takes what it takes.”
Thank you for your resilience. Thank you for your relentless efforts. Thank you for letting go of what didn’t serve you and for your willingness to experiment until you created a fulfilling life.
I understand this journey is far from over. Though life has never been better and I’m filled with optimism for what lies ahead, I acknowledge that there is still much growth to achieve—and I’m eager for it.
I love you dearly. This letter may seem inadequate to express my feelings, but please know that the love, gratitude, and understanding reside deeply within our soul.
With Love,
Jackie
