Open Letter to Elon Musk: Questions About Mars Colonization
Written on
Chapter 1: Greetings to Mr. Musk
Dear Elon,
I’m not quite sure how to address you—should I go with "Elon," or is "Mr. Musk" more appropriate? Perhaps "Your Majesty" would be a fitting title? Regardless, it seems likely that with the limited population on Mars, we might soon be on a first-name basis. That said, if I run into you, I’ll be sure to greet you as "Your Honor" out of politeness.
I'm genuinely a huge admirer of your work! I follow your updates on Twitter and am beyond excited about your mission to transport humanity to Mars. I'm sorry to hear about your situation with Grimes; I trust it will turn out positively. My grandma always said the Universe sometimes clears the way for our blessings by removing obstacles that don’t serve our purpose.
Now, I understand you’re quite busy, so I’ll cut to the chase. I have several questions and concerns regarding your plans for establishing a colony on Mars.
Section 1.1: Affordability for the Average Family
First off, how can a middle-class family like mine afford this space travel adventure? I noticed on your website that a shared ride costs at least $1 million. With student loans, a family of five, a mortgage, and aspirations for a Model X, I feel like there should be a more budget-friendly option for those of us who aren’t super wealthy. Will there ever be something akin to a Delta Airlines for trips to Mars?
Section 1.2: Travel Logistics
Speaking of travel, what about luggage restrictions? Moving to Mars is a monumental task, and I’m anxious about how many personal items, clothes, and comforts we can bring along. Are carry-ons permitted, and if so, what’s the size limit? Also, will meals be provided during the long journey? I need to know how many snacks to pack!
Chapter 2: Life on Mars
The first video discusses an open letter from a Tesla investor to Elon Musk, focusing on concerns about keeping Tesla a public company. This video provides insights into the challenges and considerations Musk faces as he navigates corporate decisions.
Section 2.1: Kid-Friendly Environment
Regarding life on Mars, will it be suitable for children? Finding a babysitter for a multi-month journey seems nearly impossible, so I’d like to know if Mars will be a child-friendly place. Will there be schools on Mars, and if so, what are their ratings? My kids deserve a top-notch education, no matter where they are. Will there be recreational spaces like parks or swimming pools? My son has asthma; will the dust from the atmosphere alteration pose a risk?
Section 2.2: Community Composition
Who will be living on Mars? My neighbor Nancy has expressed interest in moving to space, but honestly, I don’t think anyone would want to spend time with her. Is there a plan to ensure a diverse demographic on Mars? We’ll need a mix of artisans to teach and create. My skill set in fabrics could be beneficial for the Martian community!
Chapter 3: Culinary Curiosities and Governance
I've been wondering what Martian cuisine will look like. Are we to become space vegans? I can handle vegetarian options, but a life devoid of wine and cheese seems hard to fathom! And what would a surf and turf meal be called on Mars? As for governance, will there be a structured system in place? A chaotic society akin to Mad Max might be thrilling, but it likely wouldn’t be sustainable or beneficial for our image. I’m concerned about a society reminiscent of "Dune," especially since I haven’t read the books.
The second video features Elon Musk sharing an OpenAI letter that raises concerns worthy of investigation. This discussion sheds light on the complexities that may arise in the transition to a new society on Mars.
In closing, these are my primary concerns and questions. I hope you consider my thoughts regarding our future on Mars. Please feel free to reach out if you’d like to discuss any of these points further or if you need additional information about why Nancy wouldn’t be a suitable Martian resident.
Best wishes,
V.S.
