Exploring the 12.9" iPad Pro: A Game Changer for Creatives

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to the 12.9" iPad Pro

With the arrival of Final Cut Pro on the iPad, I found myself in a unique position as a content creator. Having just paid off my Mac Studio and Studio Display, I felt compelled to embrace the latest technology that Apple offers.

12.9" iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard

The 12.9" iPad Pro, priced at $1799, accompanied by the Magic Keyboard at $349, offers a new frontier for creators. As a YouTuber focused on Final Cut Pro and Apple products, I needed to stay ahead by diving into this new device.

I’ve owned an iPad mini since its latest release, using it for basic tasks, but the 12.9" iPad Pro presents a different experience, especially when paired with the Magic Keyboard which transforms it into a more laptop-like device. Here are my initial thoughts after a week of using it as my primary device.

Chapter 2: Ergonomics & Usability

This device is quite substantial.

The iPad alone is lightweight and easy to handle, making it ideal for tasks like photo editing while relaxing on the couch. I recently edited a significant collection of photos using the RNI Films app, and the experience was seamless and enjoyable. The app's design is stunning, and working with the iPad on my lap felt effortless.

Surprisingly, the iPad Pro feels more like a compact laptop than a tablet when using it with the Magic Keyboard. While adjusting the screen angle can be less flexible compared to a traditional notebook, the default position often feels just right when sitting at a desk.

The Magic Keyboard, albeit pricey, is a stunning accessory that adds considerable heft to the iPad. While it enhances the overall experience, it also makes the device feel more substantial compared to the lightweight iPad alone.

However, the material of the Magic Keyboard tends to attract dust and smudges, which can be frustrating for someone who values pristine technology. The keyboard size is smaller than my 14” MacBook Pro, and I often find myself hitting the wrong keys. Adjusting to this will take some time.

Chapter 3: iPadOS Experience

The Command + Tab feature for app switching is a game changer, allowing me to utilize the iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard effectively, mimicking a laptop experience. For someone who relies heavily on typing and keyboard shortcuts, this functionality is crucial.

Setting up the iPad was an enjoyable process, as I customized widgets, folders, and installed my previous apps. Unfortunately, I’ve encountered issues with my iCloud passwords not syncing, which I need to investigate further.

While I don’t miss the arrow cursor, the lack of a three-finger drag option on the Magic Keyboard's trackpad is something I wish was available. Also, I found it surprising that the iPad Pro doesn’t allow for Lock Screen customization like the iPhone.

The Dock is a fantastic feature that enhances the notebook-like feel of the iPad.

Chapter 4: Pricing & Value Considerations

With a combined price of $1799 for the iPad and $349 for the Magic Keyboard, I often find myself questioning if this setup is worth it compared to a MacBook Air. The price is significant, especially since I opted for the 1TB SSD model, which drives up the cost.

If I were an artist or heavily engaged in music, drawing, or detailed photo editing, I would likely prefer the iPad Pro for its creative capabilities. The device offers a unique blend of functionality that can replace a MacBook for many creative tasks.

Final Thoughts

While I appreciate the iPad Pro, if I weren’t a YouTuber focused on Final Cut Pro, I wouldn’t consider purchasing one. Personally, I prefer a traditional laptop for its keyboard and trackpad, which are essential for my workflow.

Interestingly, the M2 MacBook Air, with 16GB of unified memory and a 1TB SSD, costs over $400 less than the iPad Pro with a similar configuration. The iPad Pro does have unique features that cater to creative tasks, but the value comparison is worth considering.

What are your thoughts? Is the MacBook Air a better value, or does the 12.9" iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil justify the additional cost?
