Finding Joy in Your Unremarkable Journey: Embrace Progress

Chapter 1: The Quest for Reflection
In today's fast-paced society, moments of deep contemplation are scarce. Can you recall the last time you experienced an unexpected moment of insight? Perhaps while strolling through a forest or a quiet city street on a leisurely Saturday, free from the pressures of the week and an endless task list, a profound realization about your life, or even the lives of others, suddenly dawned upon you. These instances feel almost magical, as if you are precisely where you need to be, both spiritually and physically.
However, amidst our busy lives, finding these moments is challenging. When they do arise, they can be daunting. Facing our inner thoughts without distractions can be intimidating. Often, we seek to escape this self-reflection. Our hectic routines are symptoms of our collective apprehensions. Just yesterday, I spoke with someone who expressed her boredom during spring break, wishing to return to work for a sense of purpose. Yet, there is always something to occupy our time—be it Netflix, scrolling through social media, or endless tasks. But how many of these activities truly engage us on a meaningful level?
When asked about what truly matters in life, most people struggle to articulate a coherent response, often avoiding the question out of fear of disturbing their inner peace. We find ourselves in a state of confusion, akin to a deer caught in headlights, overwhelmed by the barrage of information around us.
Going Deeper: The Need for Awakening
To escape this paralysis, we must delve deeper into our consciousness. If you wish to avoid being that deer caught in the headlights, it is essential to awaken. You might argue that you are already awake, busy with daily activities. I understand that sentiment. Living in a bustling city and maintaining a hectic schedule can indeed feel like being alert. However, I refer to a different kind of awakening—one that encompasses spiritual awareness.
Recently, I managed to rise early after a few difficult days when getting out of bed felt nearly impossible. I convinced myself to sleep in for an extra hour, which allowed me a brief window of 30 minutes for my creative pursuits. Now, I find myself comfortably seated, focusing intently on finishing this article without constantly checking the clock. This time allows me to explore my thoughts deeply.
It may sound cliché, but I genuinely need this time to write, reflect, and develop the ideas from the remarkable books I read, such as What Matters Most by James Hollis and The Shallows by Nicholas Carr. These works resonate with me, and I believe it is vital to share insights that nourish my soul. What about you? What brings you joy?
Enjoyment: The Journey, Not the Destination
It's essential to recognize that wherever you seek to explore further, you may initially struggle. However, this journey is about nurturing your inner self, not pursuing external validation. A common misconception is that when we start something new—say, learning to play the guitar—we immediately envision ourselves performing for family or large audiences rather than appreciating the personal joy that comes from musical expression.
After a long day at work, picking up my guitar is a moment of tranquility. It fills me with joy. The same principle applies to any endeavor you pursue with depth. Engage in activities for the intrinsic rewards they provide, and fulfillment will follow naturally.
“In the end I [realized] that I had no choice [but to write]. I couldn’t do anything else. When I tried, I got so depressed I couldn’t stand it. So when I wrote yet another novel or screenplay that I couldn’t sell, I had no choice but to write another after that. The truth was, I was enjoying myself. Maybe nobody else liked the stuff I was doing, but I did. I was learning. I was getting better. The work became, in its own demented way, a practice. It sustained me, and it sustains me still.” — Steven Pressfield, Turning Pro
Imagine a world where everyone pursued their passions with the same fervor. A courageous world, indeed, ready to embrace its potential under the sun.
