Embracing Freedom: Celebrating the Joy of Self-Love

Chapter 1: The Concept of Freedom-versary
Today, my phone was buzzing with messages from my father, reminding us all about his and my mother's upcoming fiftieth wedding anniversary. My younger brother also mentioned that his own anniversary was today. In a light-hearted moment, I quipped that I should have my own reverse anniversary celebration.
While I was just joking, it was a way to highlight my unique situation as the only divorced member of the family. My sister's response, however, resonated deeply. She suggested calling it a "Freedom-anniversary" or "Freedom-versary."
Her words filled me with warmth and recognition, as she understood the significance of my divorce and what it meant for my journey toward freedom.
Section 1.1: Reflections on Divorce
I vividly recall my first Thanksgiving post-divorce, seated at the family table surrounded by relatives, most of whom were in stable relationships. Out of nowhere, my mother proclaimed that children shouldn't grow up without both a mother and a father, completely disregarding my presence.
At that moment, I felt like I had been punched in the gut. Having two children myself, I was grappling with the aftermath of leaving a marriage marked by emotional and physical abuse. The gaslighting I endured made me question my worth as a mother and a person.
"I’m sorry, it’s just what I believe," she continued, oblivious to my pain.

Yet, my sister recognized the truth of my experience. Leaving that toxic relationship meant gaining freedom—true freedom. I had felt trapped, exhausted, and broken, losing sight of who I was.
The day I walked away marked the beginning of my journey toward reclaiming my identity and autonomy. It was the first step towards a remarkable transformation and a life filled with potential.
Section 1.2: The Importance of Self-Love
Society often places immense value on romantic partnerships and marriage, presenting them as the ultimate goal. However, we must also celebrate self-love and the freedom that comes from within.
I have decided to honor my own Freedom-versary moving forward.
