# The Misconception of Luck: Hard Work vs. Fortune

Written on

Chapter 1: The Unfair Accusation of Luck

It’s a common narrative that individuals who achieve remarkable things simply got lucky. This notion often provides a sense of relief to those who haven’t found similar success, allowing them to rationalize their own circumstances. However, for many successful individuals, what is often labeled as ‘luck’ is actually the result of immense dedication and effort.

This paragraph will result in an indented block of text, typically used for quoting other text.

Section 1.1: The Reality of Opportunity

It is important to acknowledge that some people begin their journeys with advantages that others do not. For instance, individuals born in affluent nations or raised in supportive environments have a head start compared to those from less privileged backgrounds. This observation is not meant to downplay the genuine challenges faced by many.

Influencer Molly Mae faced backlash after stating on a podcast, “we all have the same 24 hours in a day.” While some viewed her comments as insensitive, I believe they were misinterpreted. She wasn’t intending to dismiss the struggles of those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Though I may not experience the same level of scrutiny due to my gender and lesser public presence, I want to clarify this point early on.

In one sense, we all enjoy a degree of luck if we find ourselves in situations where opportunities abound. Yet, the jabs of “you got lucky” often come from those who have not faced poverty and who have had access to similar opportunities.

Many individuals who share similar backgrounds may not reach the same heights of success, yet they still criticize their peers for their perceived fortune. Furthermore, numerous individuals who rise from difficult circumstances manage to transform their adversity into remarkable achievements.

Countless stories of overcoming hardship illustrate that the dismissive remarks from those in stable financial situations stem from jealousy and a lack of accountability for their own paths.

Even individuals who win the lottery often face challenges, contrary to the common belief that they are simply ‘lucky.’ While they may receive unexpected wealth, many struggle to manage it properly, leading to a return to financial instability. They frequently find themselves facing altered relationships, unsure of whom to trust.

Due to their unearned windfall, lottery winners can sometimes attract resentment, as people expect them to share their wealth, viewing it as ‘free money.’

It is essential to recognize that some people do find themselves in the right place at the right time, allowing them to take advantage of favorable circumstances. As Roman philosopher Seneca wisely stated, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”

Those deemed ‘lucky’ have typically prepared themselves to seize opportunities when they arise, having put in the necessary effort beforehand.

Let’s set aside our insecurities and stop labeling others as merely lucky; instead, we should acknowledge the hard work that underpins their achievements. The effort behind what appears to be ‘luck’ is often unseen but is crucial to their success.
