Creating Timeless Brands: Moving Beyond Trends in Design

Written on

Chapter 1: The Challenge of Lasting Brand Identity

Establishing a brand identity that endures is no simple feat. Crafting one that stands the test of time is even more complex.

To create a successful brand, it's essential to define how you want your company to be perceived and develop a visual identity that effectively conveys that vision. However, even when executed flawlessly, there is no assurance that your brand will endure. This uncertainty often stems from a flawed approach to brand exploration.

If you've participated in a branding initiative, you might recognize the typical sequence of events:

  1. A client believes their brand needs a modernization.
  2. Within moments, you hear: "I want something cool and modern!"
  3. You contemplate how to position the brand within the current marketplace.
  4. You analyze how competing brands are presenting themselves.
  5. You compile a mood board featuring the latest design trends.
  6. Ultimately, you and the client settle on a design—perhaps a familiar look, an avant-garde approach, or something that exists between the two.

Some incredible brands have emerged from processes like this and are thriving today. You know the ones—brands that utilize bold serif fonts, vibrant gradients, or whimsical illustrations that can feel slightly unconventional.

While I don't intend to criticize these brands or their creators, they have effectively positioned themselves for the present market.

However, the next time a client engages you for a branding project, consider asking whether their business is aiming for significant growth in the future or if there's a broader vision that should be reflected in their branding. While today's Gen Z audience may be enamored with retro aesthetics and playful design elements, how will tomorrow's consumers respond?

By fixating on current trends to earn design accolades, we may inadvertently undermine the needs of our clients.

Branding designers are tasked with addressing challenges, not simply implementing trends that may not align with the unique positioning and long-term vision of a brand.
