Navigating Leadership Styles: Finding Your Transport Metaphor

Chapter 1: Understanding Leadership Styles
In my initial role as a Director of Operations, my supervisor posed an intriguing question: “What type of transport do you use to guide your team? Is it a jet, a helicopter, or perhaps a four-wheeled vehicle?” Initially taken aback, I listened as he elaborated on his leadership philosophy.
He explained, “When you drive a car, it’s wonderful! You’re close to your team, seen as one of them, and earn their trust. However, your perspective is limited—you can only foresee the next turn. Additionally, being deeply involved in day-to-day tasks means the leadership team may hardly notice your presence.”
He continued, “In a jet, your viewpoint expands! You can strategize effectively, observing the intricate details of the organization and linking your team’s efforts to broader objectives. However, this distance may cause you to overlook the customer experience, which your team manages down below in the cars.”
Then, he introduced the helicopter analogy. “A helicopter provides the advantage of height, allowing you to foresee potential obstacles, appreciate the bigger picture, and interact with peers and leaders. It keeps you close to your teams, enabling you to land and offer assistance when necessary.”
After reflecting on these insights, I established my own leadership approach. Now, I ask you: What kind of transport do you use to lead your team?
