# Understanding the End of Desire: Letting Go of Unhealthy Attractions

Written on

Chapter 1: The Nature of Desire

Desire often fuels unhealthy attachments, driving us to pursue unavailable individuals and engage in self-destructive behaviors that contradict our instincts. The moment we release the idea that we need someone else to complete us is when we create a new space for self-worth. This shift allows us to view ourselves as equals to others.

Desire can be a misleading force in dating and relationships, suggesting that there is a specific person we should want or need. It can easily lead us astray, causing us to overlook red flags and question our past choices with regret. We often forget that not all desires are worth pursuing—especially when it comes to relationships. Just as past traumas can lead to harmful addictions, our relational desires can also become distorted.

In this discussion, I aim to highlight the importance of recognizing which desires to follow in order to avoid attracting the wrong partners and making detrimental choices.

Inspired by my own experiences and the poignant lyrics from "End of Desire" by Muna, I am reminded of the internal struggles we face in relationships. The lead singer captures a pivotal moment, questioning whether being chosen will finally fill the void that desire has created in her life. The lyrics convey a sense of yearning for something unattainable:

“Oh God, save me

I want an impossible thing

I want to be free of this ache, of this need

I want not to want anything…”

It illustrates the conflict between internal emptiness and the longing for validation from others. Many of us have been led to believe that being chosen will solve our problems, elevating our self-worth in the process. A fleeting connection can trigger thoughts like, “This must be the answer!” leading us to place undue importance on another person’s approval.

However, while receiving that validation can be exhilarating, the journey to get there often involves feelings of inadequacy, stress, and a desperate search for external sources of fulfillment.

This video delves into the dynamics of attraction and how stepping away can sometimes increase respect and desire in relationships.

Section 1.1: The Science of Stress and Desire

The relationship between stress and desire is a well-explored concept. Historical studies on rats demonstrated that performance can improve under stress, such as when subjected to electrical shocks. Recent findings with university students indicated that stress made it more challenging to resist temptations, like the scent of chocolate.

From a biological perspective, this connection makes sense. Without desires to alleviate stress, we risk the negative impacts it can have on our minds and bodies. However, the desires I’m discussing arise from psychological stress that affects our sense of identity, raising questions like:

  • Am I lovable?
  • Am I attractive?
  • Do I have worth as a person?

These often-unconscious inquiries create a persistent low-level stress that drives us to seek relationships as a form of escape.

But can relationships genuinely heal us?

Section 1.2: The Dangers of Unhealthy Desire

“Deep down I know

I am worshiping a false idol

Deep down I know

It’s a false hope…”

Muna's lyrics resonate deeply, underscoring the futility of expecting someone else to fill our internal void. While surrounding ourselves with loving individuals can provide support, it’s essential to recognize that our core wounds often lead to limiting beliefs about our self-worth.

Those struggling with low self-esteem frequently attract unhealthy dynamics. Factors such as poor boundaries, subconscious beliefs about deserving less, or fear of intimacy can result in toxic relationships. Similar to how addictions can manifest, unhealthy relationship patterns often follow the wounded psyche.

Desires are a natural part of life, and they can be heightened by stress. Whether seeking comfort in food, alcohol, or a relationship, we often look for external validation to fill our needs. However, if we do receive that validation, does our worth become contingent on ongoing approval? What happens when relationships end?

This discussion doesn’t dismiss the healing potential of relationships; rather, it encourages us to explore the origins of our desires. Are they rooted in unhealed wounds? Is there an underlying stress pushing you to seek validation from others? Are you compromising your boundaries in hopes of winning someone over?

These are crucial questions to reflect on when navigating desire, especially when the individuals we’re drawn to exhibit unavailability and warning signs.
