Simply put, one of the least productive responses is to engage in a battle with the challenge.

For instance, if faced with a plumbing disaster, reacting with frustration might sound like this:

“Oh great! This will be so expensive, and we’ll be stuck using the kids’ bathroom for weeks. Just when I need to focus on that important work memo. What terrible timing!”

This reaction embodies the tendency to let our ego take control, ultimately exacerbating the situation.

The Emotional Baggage of Competition

It’s no secret that I carry emotional baggage regarding competition and the desire to be perceived as a winner. This leads to thoughts such as, “That guy got lucky. I played poorly. Why do I even compete anymore?” Instead of falling into that negative spiral, I took a different approach.

I began to visualize a snow globe. When shaken, the snowflakes swirl around, but when left undisturbed, they gradually settle. I likened the snow to my negative feelings and realized that engaging with these emotions only stirred them up further.

Finding Calm in the Storm

When I felt the sting of disappointment, I focused on the image of the snow globe, observing the snowflakes as they fell. I allowed myself to feel the sting while imagining the snowflakes drifting down, all while taking deep, calming breaths. The Power of Observation
