The Future of Writing Platforms: Why I'm Shifting to Twitter
Written on
The Decline of Traditional Writing Platforms
Writing platforms are facing significant challenges. From Blogger to Quora, many smaller blogging sites struggle with a common issue: scaling while maintaining profitability. The statistics on monthly active users from 2019 to 2023 illustrate a concerning stagnation.
The core difficulty in scaling a blogging business lies in preserving quality. For instance, Quora introduced a paid membership model in 2021 but had to scrap it due to declining content standards. Once viewed as a trusted source for questions and traffic, Quora has become overrun by users eager to cash in, diluting its reputation.
Moreover, with the rise of AI-generated content, writing platforms are now grappling with the challenge of producing emotionally engaging material.
The Struggles of Medium
It's disheartening to see Medium, a platform I've invested in, falling behind competitors like Substack and WordPress. Earning money on these platforms has proven to be considerably easier. Substack and WordPress allow for diverse content formats, including podcasts and integration with Telegram groups, amplifying reach and engagement.
Twitter's Response to the Market
Recently, Twitter has taken notice of the decline in quality across various writing platforms. The company has removed multiple platforms that failed to uphold standards, and it is actively working to create a space for content creators to monetize their work through advertising.
Content creators can benefit from a favorable revenue-sharing model: 50% of ad revenue and an impressive 97% of subscription earnings.
The Potential of Twitter's User Base
With approximately 353.90 million users and around 420,000 verified accounts, Twitter presents a wealth of opportunities for those willing to engage. The platform aims to be an all-in-one solution, incorporating diverse features, including a brokerage system for stock and crypto trading announced by Elon Musk in April 2023.
Why I'm Considering Leaving Medium
Medium has made numerous missteps recently, particularly its inability to collaborate with Twitter, which has forced users to resort to lesser alternatives like Mastodon. Additionally, the platform's refusal to compensate publication editors has been frustrating. The surge of AI-generated content in the last six months has drastically reduced the value of contributions on Medium.
Investing My Efforts into Twitter
In contrast to Medium, where gaining followers is relatively easy, Twitter sets a higher bar for entry into its content creator programs. To qualify, you need 500 followers for creator mode and 10,000 for subscription eligibility.
Elon Musk’s substantial following and impressive passive income from subscriptions highlight the potential for creators on Twitter. As I observe the changes Musk is implementing, I am motivated to put more effort into my Twitter presence.
The Need for Innovation
It's disappointing to see many social media executives simply replicating what Elon Musk is doing instead of fostering innovation. When was the last time a writing platform introduced something genuinely new? The answer is, hardly ever!
Looking Ahead with Twitter
I hope my perspective clarifies why I’m focusing on the advantages of being an early adopter on Twitter. The platform is still evolving, offering unique opportunities for those who join now.
