Reflecting on My 2024 Writing Goals: A Quarterly Check-In

Quarterly Review of Writing Goals
As we reach the end of the first quarter of 2024, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my writing objectives for the year. This is a personal accountability exercise, aiming to assess how I'm doing with my resolutions laid out earlier.
Continue Morning Pages
Each morning, I aim to fill three pages in my notebook, a practice I adopted from my first complete read of The Artist's Way in 2022. Although I don’t always complete my morning pages in the morning, I utilize the first third to set daily priorities and create task lists. They might not align perfectly with Julia Cameron's original intent, but they certainly enrich my life.
Review Morning Pages
While I have skimmed through some entries, I find myself stuck around December, which puts me 2-3 months behind my desired reading pace. I have other monthly reading targets that take precedence, but since I've been meeting those with extra time, it might be time to integrate my morning pages into my routine more seriously.
Submit an Article to a Peer-Reviewed Journal
I aimed to achieve this by the end of April, and I successfully submitted my article this week! Naturally, I soon discovered a book I should have referenced, but that’s out of my control now. I’ll await the review.
Present at a Conference
This goal has been accomplished! Although I didn't receive much feedback due to the high caliber of papers presented in our panel, the overall experience was positive.
Draft a Book Proposal for My Academic Work
I’m ahead of schedule on this front! Most of the introduction is written, and I now need to elaborate on the chapter summaries.
Publish Weekly Blog Posts
I’ve learned that the key to earning on Medium is writing for their publications, many of which require exclusive content. Consequently, I’ve been posting to Medium around once a week, though it rarely mirrors my website content.
Contribute Monthly to Counter Arts
I've been successful in contributing to the film section of Counter Arts on Medium, which I truly enjoy. It's my favorite publication to write for!
Daily Writing Practice for Satirical Novel
I hit a roadblock here. After a few weeks of working through Robert Ray's The Weekend Novelist, I struggled with a prompt to write a complex scene at the end of February and froze. Fiction writing is quite challenging, especially for someone with limited training, and I find writing dialogue particularly daunting. I plan to resume practice but with a different approach, possibly using the Ninja Writers' journal prompts.
Recoup My Medium Investment
So far, I’ve earned $19.46 towards recouping the $50 investment to monetize on Medium. An article I wrote for Books Are Our Superpower received a boost, accounting for around two-thirds of my earnings thus far. If I have the good fortune of another boosted article, I might achieve my goal. If not, I should be close. Stay tuned!
