Navigating Grief and Reflection: A Personal Journey

Written on

Understanding the Pain of Loss

The upcoming week looms heavily, filled with memories that I confront each year. On June 23rd, 2007, my father passed away after battling ureter cancer that had spread to his spine. While his passing was a release for him, it marked the beginning of our family's grief journey. He was 77—an age he often associated with the biblical saying about returning to dust, yet he had been granted a few extra years. Our family had celebrated his golden anniversary just six months prior, fully aware of the impending sorrow that awaited us.

A cherished family moment before the loss.

My father was the cornerstone of our family, particularly for my mother, who was beginning to show signs of dementia. Although my father managed to shield her from this reality, it was evident that she struggled with everyday tasks. The specifics of her condition were never fully diagnosed, but her gradual decline was undeniable. Once he was gone, the weight of her illness became even more pronounced.

I had spent the afternoon with my parents but needed to tend to my animals at home. Sitting by someone who is dying is mentally taxing. Thankfully, family friends were present, allowing me to step away for a brief respite. After caring for the animals, I tried to eat, though my appetite was scarce due to the emotional strain.

A Dream of Reunion

Later, while resting, I dreamt of my grandparents. I recognized my grandfather but had only seen my grandmother in photographs. In my dream, they appeared youthful and vibrant, urging me to hurry—my father was nearing his end. Confused yet compelled, I woke my husband, insisting we leave immediately.

We arrived just in time for my father’s final breath, surrounded by love and calm. The atmosphere was serene, a moment of beauty amid grief. My grandparents had been there to welcome him, creating a sense of peace in his passing.

The following day was my mother’s birthday, a day that would forever be tainted by loss. Witnessing her transformation into a widow was heart-wrenching. My siblings reacted differently to our father's death, which added to my emotional burden. It was painful to see my mother’s spirit fade as she faced the reality of living without her partner.

The Stages of Grief

Over the years, my mother required increasing support until she moved to a nursing home, where she ultimately succumbed to dementia and an undiagnosed breast cancer. I harbor no resentment towards the nursing staff for failing to recognize her illness; my mother’s dementia limited her ability to engage in her care. The void left by my father was profound, and she longed for his presence.

This week also marks the full moon, a time that perpetually disturbs my sleep and brings forth strange dreams. The melancholy of midsummer serves as a reminder of the passing seasons, evoking feelings of nostalgia and loss.

Reflecting on seasons of change.

The week culminates in memories of my father's funeral, a gathering fraught with tension. My sister’s harsh words during the arrangements still resonate with me. My oldest brother, a priest, unexpectedly took on the role of officiating. His eulogy focused more on his experiences with our father than their relationship, leaving me bewildered.

This week is a painful reminder of my father’s absence, reopening wounds I cannot ignore. Each year, I try to convince myself that time will dull the grief, yet the sadness returns with force. I accept this cycle and look forward to the warmth of summer once this week has passed.

A symbol of hope after sorrow.
