Lessons Learned from My First Ultramarathon Experience
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to Ultramarathons
A few days ago, I embarked on my first ultramarathon, covering a daunting 124km with an ascent of 2000m. Having only been running for two years and previously completing a marathon, this was an immense challenge. I had to dig deep and push my boundaries. This kind of experience is a wake-up call, teaching you a multitude of lessons along the way. My goal is to share these insights and perhaps inspire you to consider participating in such an event!
Section 1.1: The Catalyst for Change
After finishing the Paris Marathon last year, I craved a greater challenge. Thus, I impulsively signed up for a 124km ultramarathon without proper training. On the night of May 17, I stood at the starting line, ready to take on this grueling test, which lasted just under 24 hours for me. This spontaneous decision has proven to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
Section 1.2: Accepting Pain as Part of the Journey
It's no secret that ultramarathons are painful, especially for those of us who aren't well-prepared. However, this pain is a choice we make. By signing up for the race, you accept the challenge of long hours filled with discomfort.
In contrast, many individuals endure pain they never chose, such as those suffering from chronic illnesses or facing traumatic situations. Reminding myself of this distinction fueled my determination to keep moving forward.
Chapter 2: Personal Growth Through Suffering
7 Things Ultra Running Taught Me About Life - This video explores profound insights gained from the rigors of ultrarunning, emphasizing resilience and personal growth.
Section 2.1: The Strength Found in Struggle
I firmly believe that happiness often emerges from overcoming hardship. The first time I experienced tears of joy was after finishing my first marathon, and the second was post-ultramarathon.
Experiencing a significant challenge helps you put other life stresses in perspective. For instance, after completing an ultramarathon, minor inconveniences seem trivial. The invincible feeling that follows serves as a lasting reminder of what you can achieve against the odds.
Section 2.2: The Power of Community
As Aristotle famously stated, humans are inherently social beings. Although I usually prefer solitude, the company I found during the ultramarathon was invaluable. Running alongside others provided mutual support and camaraderie, which was crucial for persevering through tough moments.
Conversely, if a teammate falters, it can inadvertently affect the entire group's motivation. Nonetheless, this experience allowed me to connect with an array of fascinating individuals, all united by a common goal: to finish the race.
Chapter 3: Mind Over Matter
10 Unexpected Lessons From My First Ultramarathon - This video highlights surprising takeaways from the ultramarathon experience, focusing on mental strength and personal resilience.
Section 3.1: The Dual Nature of Your Mind
Your mind serves as both your ally and your adversary. It can guide your actions, reminding you to stay nourished and pace yourself, but it can also signal you to stop at the first sign of discomfort.
Through this race, I learned to filter my brain's messages, choosing which signals to heed and which to ignore. Stepping outside my comfort zone revealed just how much I could accomplish when I didn't let my mind dictate my limits.
Section 3.2: Taking Responsibility for Your Journey
While community support is vital, you ultimately control your decisions. At any moment during the ultramarathon, I could have chosen to quit, but I didn't. This is true in everyday life as well; you are the architect of your destiny.
It's essential to take ownership of your life and the consequences of your choices, as this accountability shapes your future.
Chapter 4: Embracing the Ups and Downs
The journey is filled with challenges, and I faced several moments of despair during the race. After 73km, fatigue and pain nearly led me to surrender. Yet, the encouragement from my grandparents, who came to cheer me on, reignited my determination.
Just like in life, you must understand that lows are temporary. If you give up at the first sign of struggle, you may miss out on the highs that follow.
Section 4.1: Start Before You're Ready
Many people train rigorously before attempting their first ultramarathon, but I chose to dive in without waiting. While some may advise against rushing, I believe that it's crucial to test your limits and learn from the experience.
Perfection is not a prerequisite for action; instead, take the leap. If successful, celebrate; if not, learn and grow from the experience to make future attempts smoother.
Section 4.2: The Balance of Humility and Recognition
Finishing an ultramarathon can make you feel invincible, even if you place among the last. It's vital to remain humble, as there will always be someone more skilled. However, recognizing your achievements is equally important.
You may not be the best, but you have accomplished feats that many may never attempt. Acknowledging this reality fosters a sense of pride in your abilities.
Final Thoughts
Now that I've achieved this monumental goal, what lies ahead? I’m uncertain but committed to setting new challenges while enjoying the journey of progress.
As I continue training, I find joy in the process itself, which is often more rewarding than the destination. This brings us back to a fundamental question: are you focused on goals or systems?
