Understanding Amotivational Syndrome: A Personal Reflection

Written on

Chapter 1: The Reality of Amotivational Syndrome

Do you recall when amotivational syndrome was primarily associated with marijuana use? It was a topic rarely discussed outside clinical circles, and perhaps now it’s largely overlooked by many professionals in the field. The compounds found in cannabis are potent, which explains why it’s so widely consumed; they can significantly alter one’s mindset and emotional state.

Prior to my own experiences, I heard anecdotes of older individuals infusing marijuana leaves in alcohol to alleviate arthritis pain. Fast forward to today, and I find myself lacking enthusiasm and interest in activities that would typically engage or excite me. This is a common struggle for writers on platforms like Medium, as I grapple with diminished focus, apathy, and a fading memory.

Reflecting back on my studies in substance abuse counseling that began in 1978, I remember references to observations made in the 1960s regarding the long-term effects of cannabis on personality, emotional health, and cognitive abilities. In my recent experiences working within rehabilitation settings, I’ve noticed that other psychoactive substances, such as methamphetamines and certain over-the-counter cough medications, also contribute to amotivational syndrome. There’s often confusion surrounding how these substances can alleviate symptoms, provide a temporary sense of relief, or lead to overall happiness.

Feeling a lack of motivation and joy, I recognize that I may be experiencing this syndrome, despite not having consumed cannabis in over forty years. I made a conscious decision to seek out an activity that could re-engage my interest. I kicked off my shoes and climbed into bed, taking a moment to focus on my breathing. After a restless night, I found myself tossing off the covers and decided to conduct a little experiment.

With my pine-scented cleaner running low, I combined rubbing alcohol, vinegar, and water in a spray bottle. Thankfully, there was no adverse reaction, and I proceeded to clean a section of my countertop. Satisfied with the outcome, I considered what else I could tackle. The thought of the grimy bathroom crossed my mind, but I lacked plastic gloves. Instead, I grabbed a washcloth that I could wash later and got to work on the filthy surfaces.

In this moment, I felt fortunate for the simple things: a bathroom, a toilet, a countertop, some vinegar, and a spray bottle. Creating a list of the items I appreciate has helped combat my feelings of lethargy, and this is why I’m compelled to write.
