Navigating the Journey of a PhD: From Science to Communication

Chapter 1: The Path to Biochemistry
Choosing biochemistry as my undergraduate major was a decision influenced by a trusted friend. Although I initially considered microbiology, I’m grateful for her guidance. This choice provided me with a solid foundation of knowledge and valuable experiences during both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees.
However, I often found myself at a loss when others questioned the purpose of studying biology or how I could monetize this knowledge. This uncertainty led me to contemplate management entrance exams, but I soon recognized that such a path wouldn't bring me fulfillment. My Master's project, along with an internship at Delhi University South Campus, illuminated the world of research for me. I discovered my enthusiasm for project design and tackling challenges, affirming that this was the direction I wanted to pursue.
Section 1.1: Embracing the Challenges of Research
Upon joining IISc for my PhD, I was the sole researcher in the institute focusing on fruit flies. This unique position presented its own set of challenges, although we collaborated with NCBS for necessary reagents and support. My project was primarily exploratory, and I often lacked guidance, even from my peers.
Subsection 1.1.1: Finding Purpose in Uncertainty
As I encountered skepticism about the relevance of my research—particularly its lack of immediate clinical applications—I began to question my purpose again. However, I later learned that fruit fly geneticists have been awarded six Nobel Prizes. This realization reassured me that my work, while not immediately applicable, was essential for future research. It became clear that in science, no question is without merit; every inquiry contributes to the larger picture.
Chapter 2: Finding Motivation Beyond the Lab
The first video, "Flying High," showcases the journey of pursuing one's dreams and overcoming challenges. It resonates with my own experiences throughout my academic career.
When faced with difficulties in my research, I sought inspiration through volunteering to teach underprivileged children. Additionally, I participated in the GSA early career leadership program, where I interviewed professionals who had successfully transitioned into diverse fields post-PhD. These discussions deepened my understanding of how scientific skills can be applied in various careers beyond academia.
Such experiences throughout my PhD journey led me to discover my true passion: science communication. Even if I decide not to work in a laboratory in the future, I aspire to leverage my knowledge to effectively communicate scientific concepts and showcase alternative career paths for others.

Editor’s Note: Following her PhD, Ruchi conducted postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics. She is currently interning at Harvard University and preparing for a career shift into science communication.
The second video, "Captain Hollywood Project - Flying High (Official Video)," captures the essence of soaring above challenges and finding one's path, mirroring Ruchi's journey in academia.
