Chapter 1: A Unique Turn of Events
Welcome, Erica Marie! Today, I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to interview you, flipping the script from our usual roles. I appreciate your willingness to join me for this conversation. Let’s dive right into the first question!
Being on this side of the interview is quite exciting, though I admit I feel a bit anxious since it's a new experience for me. I hope I can provide some insightful responses!
Reflecting on our first interaction, I discovered it dates back to Boxing Day, December 26, 2021, at 15:34.
Indeed, you were the winner of my Christmas competition for New Writers Welcome. At that moment, I never anticipated we would be discussing this today!
Section 1.1: The Motivation Behind Entering
What inspired you to participate in a competition just a month after you joined Medium?
I’ve always been drawn to writing prompts, and competitions provide a great direction for my writing. I thrive on challenges, especially those that are creative.
A conversation with my husband about our families’ unique personalities inspired me to write "What Christmas Is All About — 'New Writers Welcome' — December Competition."
Subsection 1.1.1: The Start of a Writing Journey
Chapter 2: Overcoming Challenges
Your inaugural article on Medium, "How I Used Mantras to Overcome My Anxiety," must have been significant for you. Why did you choose this particular story?
Honestly, that piece was written years ago for my blog. When I joined Medium, I was eager to share my old writings, and this article resonated with me deeply. The mantra "this too shall pass" has helped me through various moments in life, both difficult and joyous. I explored this theme further in "My Biggest Life Lesson in 2021."
Section 2.1: The Impact of Family on Writing
It's heartwarming to hear about your family. You have two boys, and you mention that writing brings you inner peace when things feel overwhelming. Can you share where you draw your creativity from?
I find inspiration through learning and watching motivational content on YouTube. When I come across ideas that resonate with me, I feel compelled to share them. My creativity is fueled by the works of other writers and influencers.
Writing is my safe space where I can express my vulnerabilities without fear of judgment.
Section 2.2: The Bold Move to Interview
I thought our first contact was on January 27, 2022, when you boldly inquired about interviewing me. What drew you to me for an interview?
Your personality intrigued me. You blend confidence with sensitivity and honesty. I was particularly interested in your experiences as a father and how parenthood transformed your life.
Becoming a parent shifts priorities dramatically; things that once mattered fade in significance. The love I have for my children has heightened every emotion in my life.
Section 2.3: Courage in Vulnerability
You specified the direction for our interview, which might have intimidated some writers. Were you apprehensive about being so direct?
I wasn't worried about the questions, but I was concerned that you might hesitate to participate due to my lack of followers. I was grateful for your swift and sincere responses.
Chapter 3: Defining Strength and Inspiration
Were any of your answers surprising to me?
Your definition of #strongertogether was particularly striking. You described strength as recognizing and overcoming weaknesses while supporting others. This perspective contrasts sharply with the traditional view that equates strength with invulnerability. I wholeheartedly agree that we are stronger when we lift each other up.
By the way, you’ve inspired me to start my own interview series, so thank you for that!
Section 3.1: The Journey from Competitor to Editor
It’s incredible how you've transitioned from being a competition winner to interviewing the publication owner and becoming an editor for that same platform. What motivated you to apply for the editor position, and were you surprised by the selection?
I’m thrilled to have inspired you! I love learning about people, which is why I often read their "About Me" stories. Interviews provide a deeper understanding of individuals’ lives. New Writers Welcome has played a pivotal role in my Medium journey, offering a nurturing space for emerging writers. Winning competitions validated my writing skills, and I wanted to contribute to this supportive community.
Section 3.2: Personal Stories and Authenticity
Let's discuss some of your personal stories. Your piece "My Son Doesn’t Want Me" moved me deeply. How did you feel writing such a personal narrative? Were you concerned about your son reading it someday?
I wrote that piece shortly after my son expressed he wanted his dad to put him to bed. The emotions were raw, and I was simply trying to process what happened. Initially, I didn’t consider the consequences, but after receiving a negative comment, I did contemplate removing it. Ultimately, I chose to keep it because it resonated with many others.
You’ve also expressed concern about sharing your journey with your daughter. How do you navigate these fears while still being authentic?
Some parents reassured me that these phases are common, and I’ve learned to appreciate my husband’s bond with our boys, even on days when my son prefers him.
Chapter 4: The Essence of Vulnerability in Writing
You've tackled themes of insecurity and anxiety in your writing. Do you worry about judgment from others?
I do sometimes question whether I'm revealing too much. Yet, authenticity requires vulnerability; it’s how readers connect with our stories. Writers like Art Bram inspire me with their genuine approach.
Section 4.1: Childhood Reflections
You mentioned a lonely childhood. How has that shaped your life?
I have an older brother and sister, but they were much older and closer in age. This led to feelings of isolation, which is likely why I gravitate towards writing over socializing.
Section 4.2: Enjoyment in the Writing Process
Which article was the most enjoyable for you to write?
That’s a tough question! I enjoy writing so many pieces, but I particularly loved responding to a writing challenge from Megan Llorente: Erica Marie's ABCs. Writing prompts bring out my creativity!
Chapter 5: Future Aspirations and Advice
What are your current goals on Medium?
I’ve recently had to reassess my priorities due to taking on two jobs. I realized my writing suffered as a result. Now, I aim to reconnect with my favorite writers and produce content that inspires positivity and innovation.
Section 5.1: Acknowledging Influences
Who are your favorite writers?
I admire many, including Sally Prag, Sofia Chen, and Art Bram. They all share the ability to craft genuine, thought-provoking stories.
Section 5.2: Guidance for New Writers
What advice would you give to newcomers on Medium?
Enjoy writing for the love of it, not just for potential earnings. Consistency is key, even if it’s just once a week. Building a community with other writers and readers is essential.
Section 5.3: Dreaming of Adventures
If you earned $10,000 on Medium in July, how would you spend it?
I’d love to take my family to Hawaii! Living in Canada, we lack beach access, and I want to share that beautiful experience with my boys.
Thank you for this enlightening interview, Erica! I hope we can catch up again soon.
Thank you, Robert! I enjoyed our conversation and appreciate all that you do for New Writers Welcome.
