The Illusion of Motivational Coaching: A New Age Religion?
Written on
The Rise of a New Belief System
In today's world, many individuals are on the lookout for guidance. While some gravitate towards religion, others lean towards spiritual practices, and a few, in their desperation, turn to harmful habits, rationalizing their choices with the notion that life is fleeting. Some find motivation in the beauty around them and adopt this as their guiding philosophy.
Historically, religion has drawn the largest number of followers seeking meaning in life. Yet, as Western society becomes increasingly secular, its grip seems to be loosening.
For many, the spiritual dimension of life feels more distant than ever. Some have come to view religion as a mere escape from their anxieties and existential fears, opting out of traditional beliefs—I count myself among this group. Others have simply lost interest in spiritual matters altogether.
However, this shift does not imply that the fervor associated with religious devotion has vanished. Quite the contrary! A new kind of fanaticism appears to be taking shape through motivational speeches, whether in self-help coaching or other formats.
These events often resemble religious gatherings: there’s a stage, a charismatic speaker passionately addressing the crowd, and an audience that listens in rapt attention. Yet, instead of a priest or a rabbi, the figure at the center is a coach, often profiting significantly from a flawed premise:
“If I can achieve this, so can you. Just desire it and work for it.”
It pains me to see individuals entrapped by these misleading messages. They are perhaps the most deceptive of all.
Imagine someone in the audience experiencing a moment of clarity, boldly proclaiming:
“Excuse me, but let’s remember: just because one person succeeded doesn’t mean everyone can. We need to consider their unique circumstances, the opportunities they had, and the many factors that contributed to their success. If you struggle, it doesn’t mean you lack ability; it simply reflects your different life experiences!”
I envision myself at one of these events, voicing such a thought. I would likely be met with backlash and scorn, yet it’s vital for someone to challenge the narrative. I would love to be that voice that disrupts the illusion while potentially aiding someone in need.
These motivational gatherings primarily serve to enrich the speaker, often leaving attendees feeling disheartened. Picture an individual filled with hope following such an event, returning home energized and determined. However, after a month of enduring the same struggles, they might come to believe that their lack of progress is due to their inadequacy.
Despite their hard work, their financial situation remains unchanged. They may, in their despair, conclude that they are less capable than others. This tormented individual lies awake at night, grappling with feelings of inferiority, while the coach, in stark contrast, revels in their financial success.
In this scenario, the only self-help provided is for the coach, who thrives on misleading others. It’s a shameful reality!
