Driving down the highway, I received distressing news: I had failed. Instantly, a barrage of negative thoughts assaulted me: "You're worthless. How could you let this happen?" I felt powerless against these voices, but then I remembered my mental sanctuary.

Taking a deep breath, I delved into my happy place. Picture standing atop a hill, gazing at a serene blue lake surrounded by majestic snow-capped mountains.

To my right, a winding path descends to a pebbled beach, flanked by swaying tall grass. The gentle sound of grasshoppers fills the air, and the atmosphere is mild and inviting.

On my left, a traditional Japanese house appears, and as I approach, my mother greets me with warmth. "Your father is down by the shore fixing the boat," she informs me. "I’ll assist him," I reply.

Suddenly, a familiar voice chimes in, "Grandma has invited us for dinner tonight." I turn to see my grandfather smiling at me, and I feel a wave of comfort wash over me.

When I return to reality, the onslaught of negative thoughts has vanished. I feel serene, realizing that challenges help me grow. I now see failure as a blessing rather than a setback.

This swift transition from negative to positive thinking is remarkable, yet my mental sanctuary makes it feasible. Having a mental refuge has transformed my life. It serves as a safe haven during turbulent times, allowing me to return feeling composed.

To build your mental happy place, you need three key components: scenery, people, and activities.

Creating Your Scenery

If you feel intense positive emotions, you've found the right spot. However, if any negative feelings arise, it's best to select another location.

For me, I prefer something grounded in reality, like an Alpine lake. This setting is a blend of real places I’ve visited and my imagination.

To make your sanctuary vivid, engage all your senses. What time of day is it? What’s the temperature? What scents fill the air? Spend time crafting a mental image that feels tangible and familiar.

Populate Your Happy Place

You can choose to be alone or include loved ones or pets in your happy place. For me, family members and friends often appear, creating a sense of community.

The essential rule is to include only those whose presence brings you joy. If you're still grieving someone, it might be wise to wait before adding them to your sanctuary.

Once you have your surroundings and company established, it's time to decide what you'll do in this mental refuge.

Initially, you might find it helpful to have a routine when you enter your happy place. For example, you could always start by waking up to a beautiful ocean view, followed by a morning stroll on the beach.

I prefer a flexible approach; I begin in the same spot, but what happens next changes each time. You have complete control over your mental landscape, allowing for endless possibilities.

Chapter 2: Maintaining Your Sanctuary

To keep your mental retreat effective, it's essential to visit it regularly, even when you're not feeling overwhelmed.

This practice ensures that when you need to escape, your sanctuary is easily accessible. Additionally, adapt your happy place to reflect new life circumstances. For instance, after the loss of a pet, I temporarily removed her from my happy place. Once I reached acceptance, I was able to reintroduce her.

Activating Your Happy Place

Once your sanctuary is well-established, activating it becomes effortless. Simply:

  1. Close your eyes (if possible)
  2. Take a deep breath
  3. As you exhale, envision yourself in your happy place

It truly is that simple.

I encourage you to implement this technique in your life. My mental happy place has significantly improved my overall well-being, and I hope it brings you the same benefits.
