The Journey Matters More Than the Destination
What if achieving your goals doesn’t bring the satisfaction you expected?

Many individuals who appear to have reached their aspirations often share a common sentiment about the moment they accomplished their biggest dreams. They once thought that attaining these milestones would lead to genuine happiness. However, that moment often lacks the joy they anticipated. They echo the wisdom of Ralph Waldo Emerson:
“It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.”
It’s easy to dismiss this advice when it comes from someone who has already achieved great success. Yet, if countless people express similar feelings, there must be some truth behind it.
This phenomenon is known as the 'arrival fallacy,' a term introduced by Harvard psychologist Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar. It suggests that we mistakenly believe that achieving a specific ambitious goal will bring us lasting happiness, tying our joy to a single outcome. Dr. Ben-Shahar illustrated this with his own experience of winning a squash tournament:
“I thought, ‘If I win this tournament, then I’ll be happy.’ And I won, and I was happy. But soon after, the same stress, pressure, and emptiness returned.”
Why Linking Happiness to Goals Can Be Problematic
Believing that achieving a goal will result in perpetual happiness can be misleading. For one, it prevents us from appreciating the present and enjoying the daily process of growth. If the journey feels unbearable, it can lead to extended periods of dissatisfaction until we reach our goal.
Additionally, what happens if we fail to achieve that goal? Are we then condemned to a life devoid of purpose and joy? Various external factors can impede our success, and basing our happiness on a goal that may never be realized is a precarious mindset.
Moreover, happiness is a transient state influenced by numerous factors. You might feel elated about a significant professional achievement, but if it comes at the expense of your health and relationships, that joy will likely be short-lived, regardless of your success.
In Conclusion
Let’s embrace the timeless adage that the journey holds more significance than the destination. By finding joy in our daily activities and recognizing our progress, we cultivate a life filled with meaning.
Achieving that big goal is secondary; what matters is the continuous growth and presence we experience along the way. When we do reach a significant milestone, we can take a moment to celebrate it, but we don’t need to linger, as the journey itself is equally rewarding.
