Murakami’s writing routine may appear mundane, but it undeniably yields results. His daily schedule consists of:
- Rising at 4 a.m.
- Writing for five to six hours
- Completing a 10K run or swimming 1,500 meters in the afternoon
- Reading and enjoying music
- Retiring for the night by 9 p.m.
I dedicated three days to adopting Murakami’s writing regimen, and here’s a breakdown of my experiences:
Section 2.1: Day One—The Routine Begins
On Monday, I awoke at 3:30 a.m., took a shower, and engaged in a moment of prayer. By 4 a.m., I was primed to write. Although Murakami doesn’t specify breaks, I incorporated short five to ten-minute pauses every half hour during my six-hour writing session. After writing, I went for a swim at 3 p.m. and concluded my day with a half-hour reading session, resulting in a total of 11,000 words.
Section 2.2: Day Two—Adjustments and Realizations
On Tuesday, I overslept and began writing at 5 a.m. Instead of swimming, I opted for a leisurely jog around 4 p.m. By day's end, I recognized my preference for morning workouts. Come afternoon, motivation dwindled, making it challenging to stick to my exercise plan.
In a 2004 interview with the Paris Review, Murakami shared his thoughts on his routine:
"When I’m in writing mode for a novel, I get up at four a.m. and work for five to six hours. In the afternoon, I run for ten kilometers or swim for fifteen hundred meters (or do both), then I read a bit and listen to some music. I go to bed at nine p.m. I keep to this routine every day without variation. The repetition itself becomes the important thing; it’s a form of mesmerism. I mesmerize myself to reach a deeper state of mind."
His regimen, while monotonous, demands exceptional concentration. I plan to integrate aspects of Murakami's routine into my weekly writing challenge.

On my final day, I rose at 3 a.m. and began writing by 4 a.m. I managed to produce an impressive 15,000 words, completed a 2,000-meter swim, read three articles, and enjoyed some focus music before heading to bed at 8 p.m.
Closing Thoughts on the Experiment
Haruki Murakami's routine is indeed rigorous—not merely due to the early start but also because of the post-writing exercise sessions. After a prolonged writing session, the thought of a 10K run or 1,500-meter swim feels daunting. I prefer to engage in exercise during the morning hours.
Writing for five to six hours fits my pace perfectly—not too overwhelming. While I doubt I will maintain the midday jogs, I commit to a daily walk at 3 p.m. I generally exercise in the morning and appreciate listening to music or audiobooks during my afternoon stroll. Moving forward, I’ll ensure to take a one-hour walk at 3 p.m.
Overall, my attempt to adopt Haruki Murakami's writing routine was enlightening, productive, and presented its own set of challenges.
