# Essential Features I Wish My Apple Watch Had
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction
The Apple Watch is an incredibly functional device, so much so that I could manage an entire week using it alone. Even without my iPhone, I can make calls, send texts, check emails, and share my location with family. However, after a month of usage, I’ve identified ten essential features that are still missing. If Apple incorporates these in the upcoming WatchOS 9, the Apple Watch could become significantly more independent and user-friendly.
Section 1.1: A Fully Functional Browser
One major feature that I wish for is a dedicated web browser. While Android devices running Wear OS 3 have this capability, the Apple Watch only supports browsing through links found in emails or messages. Users cannot manually enter URLs, and the experience is hampered by the inability to play audio or video from web pages. Some sites seem to load indefinitely, highlighting the limitations of the current setup.
Section 1.2: Audio without Bluetooth
Another frustrating limitation is the inability to listen to music or podcasts without AirPods or other Bluetooth devices. While calls can be made through the speaker, audio content remains inaccessible to those, like myself, who are sensitive to electromagnetic frequencies. This restriction prevents me from fully utilizing my Apple Watch for audio entertainment.
Section 1.3: The Need for a Notes App
Why isn't there a Notes app available on the Apple Watch? With my previous smartphone dependency, I’ve transitioned to carrying only my watch. However, when inspiration strikes, I lack a simple way to jot down notes. I often resort to asking Siri to remind me later, which is less than ideal.
Section 1.4: Call Management Features
The absence of call forwarding and conference call capabilities is another downside. I can't forward calls to others, making it difficult to coordinate deliveries. Also, the lack of conference calling means I have to rely on others to set up calls, which can be cumbersome.
Section 1.5: Automation Possibilities
With the Shortcuts app available, it seems logical that automations should also be possible on the Apple Watch. As someone who relies on multiple automations daily, having them accessible on my watch would enhance my workflow significantly.
Section 1.6: Emergency Features in Airplane Mode
One critical oversight is the inability to notify emergency contacts while in Airplane mode. This poses a serious risk in emergencies, as the watch should automatically disable Airplane mode and send alerts to saved contacts.
Section 1.7: Fitness and Location Independence
Since I often leave my iPhone behind, it would be beneficial if the Apple Watch could operate independently for fitness tracking and location services. Currently, these features require my iPhone to function, limiting usability.
Section 1.8: ECG Functionality for Family
When I attempted to set up the ECG feature, it was restricted to my age group. This limitation prevents me from using the ECG feature for family members, which seems counterintuitive, especially when the watch can monitor heart rates for others.
Section 1.9: Screenshot Management
Currently, screenshots taken on the Apple Watch are not stored locally. They attempt to transfer to the connected iPhone, which can be inconvenient. Allowing local storage would streamline the process.
Section 1.10: Opening Mail Attachments
The Mail app is functional, but the inability to open attachments is a significant drawback. I often need to view important documents while on the go, and this limitation requires me to rely on my iPhone.
Chapter 2: Additional Features That Are Missed
There are other features that would enhance the Apple Watch experience, such as manually creating calendar events and adjusting call volume while locked. These simple adjustments could significantly improve usability.
