Chapter 1: Introduction to the Puzzle
Counting shapes can be straightforward; however, it requires a careful and systematic approach!
This puzzle features a design made up of rectangles.
Here's a clue: you'll find rectangles nested within other rectangles.
I suggest pausing here, grabbing some paper, and attempting the challenge before proceeding to the solution.
Section 1.1: Puzzle Solution
The solution is quite concise.
We begin by dividing the figure into distinct, non-overlapping sections.
Each section can be labeled with letters a through g.
For the rectangles that consist of a single region, we find:
Three rectangles are categorized as b, c, and d.
For rectangles made of two regions, we identify:
Five rectangles can be defined as ab, bc, cd, cf, and de.
For those composed of four regions, we discover:
Three rectangles are recognized: abcd, bcfg, and cdef.
In total, we have identified 11 rectangles.
Isn't that impressive?
