Embracing Excellence Through Daily Decisions

Chapter 1: The Essence of Excellence
Excellence is often perceived as a daunting pursuit, yet it is far more accessible than many believe. The misconception lies in thinking that excellence is only achieved through monumental events, such as publishing a bestselling book or winning a championship. In truth, excellence is built upon countless minor choices that lead to significant outcomes.
As Will Durant wisely stated, "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." This insight is liberating; it suggests that if you're facing challenges in any aspect of life, the path to excellence is merely a series of small decisions away.
One of the most enlightening quotes from Jordan Peterson's "12 Rules for Life" emphasizes this notion: "Five hundred small decisions, five hundred tiny actions, compose your day, today, and every day. Could you aim one or two of these at a better result?"
When we consider this idea, it becomes clear that each day presents us with 500 opportunities to choose excellence. For instance:
- Should I opt for sugary cereal or a nutritious breakfast?
- Is it better to scroll through social media or tackle my work tasks?
- Would I benefit more from connecting with my spouse after work rather than zoning out in front of the television?
These daily choices illustrate the numerous chances we have to excel. What I find most compelling about Peterson's quote is his concluding question: "Could you aim one or two of these at a better result?" This indicates that perfection isn't necessary; rather, it's about gradually steering a few decisions toward a more favorable outcome.
If you've seen my post on my 2024 reading list, you may have noticed the book "Areté" by Brian Johnson. This book resonates with the concept of 500 small decisions, as Johnson describes Areté as "expressing the best version of yourself moment to moment." Like Peterson's insight, embracing Areté doesn't demand perfection, allowing us to redeem ourselves even when we falter.
For example, if you didn't make the healthiest breakfast choice, can you opt for a nutritious lunch instead? If you missed your workout, could you take a walk after work? If you lost your temper with your kids, might you reconnect with them afterward?
Keeping Areté at the forefront of your mind ensures that no day is wasted; we have endless opportunities to progress toward excellence. The perception that excellence is elusive arises when people witness a fit individual, a loving relationship, or a victorious team; they often overlook the multitude of decisions that paved the way to that moment.
The fit person chose to exercise instead of sleeping in. The couple engaged in challenging discussions to resolve issues. The football team practiced the fundamentals diligently every day.
Therefore, if excellence is your aspiration (as it is mine), remember that it isn't solely about reaching a finish line. You can embody excellence right now, in this moment, by making improved choices and striving to present your best self as often as possible.
