Authentic self-expression is about interacting with others from a foundation of self-respect, trust, and compassion. It involves building connections, setting healthy boundaries, and adapting to circumstances without compromising our core values.

As Brene Brown wisely said, “Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are.”

Why Authenticity Can Be Daunting

For many, the act of expressing oneself can invoke fear, particularly for those who have been raised in cultures that prioritize collectivism and social conformity, such as many Middle Eastern societies. In these environments, societal norms often overshadow individuality, leading to feelings of shame and anxiety about being judged or rejected for standing out.

A common saying captures this sentiment perfectly: “Eat what pleases you, but wear what pleases others.”

Moreover, there’s a misconception that being authentic equates to being reckless or inappropriate. I once shared this belief, but I have come to realize how far from the truth it is.

Growing up in a conservative setting made authenticity a challenge for me. I carried a heavy burden of shame, which stifled my desires, curiosities, and creativity. However, through my own transformative journey, I began to shed these limiting beliefs and embrace my truth. Though my journey is ongoing, I now refuse to dim my light for anyone.

Balancing Community and Individuality

While the strength of community can bring immense meaning to our lives, it is crucial to honor our individuality and the right to express ourselves. Striking a balance between community and individuality is essential for a fulfilling and meaningful existence.

Excessive emphasis on community, as seen in many Middle Eastern cultures, or on individualism, as prevalent in Western societies, can lead to mental health issues like depression and anxiety.

As the Gospel of Thomas wisely states: “If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.”

The Right Way to Self-Express

Understanding the difference between intelligent and foolish self-expression is vital. It took me time to learn this distinction.

Seeking to stand out merely to prove a point or challenge others is counterproductive. It fosters conflict and keeps us stuck in outdated narratives. Conversely, knowing how and when to express ourselves thoughtfully is a wise approach.

Authentic self-expression doesn’t mean wearing flashy clothes to grab attention (unless that’s your style). It involves being honest about your thoughts and feelings, whether it’s sharing your emotions with a partner, pursuing a new career, or making personal choices that go against societal expectations.

When we approach the world authentically, we not only lead fulfilling lives but also inspire those around us to do the same.

Judith Glaser once noted, “Neuroscience is teaching us that ‘self-expression’ might be one — if not the most important ways for people to connect, navigate and grow with each other.”

Chapter 2: Strategies for Authentic Self-Expression

To enhance your authentic self-expression, consider these six practical tips:

  1. Take Time for Reflection: Allow yourself moments of stillness to reflect on what’s working and what isn’t in your life. Grant yourself the freedom to brainstorm solutions and jot them down in a journal.
  2. Daily Writing Practice: Dedicate at least 10 minutes each day to writing. Whether you use a physical journal or your phone, write freely without worrying about perfection. This practice strengthens your intuition and reduces self-doubt.
  3. Experiment with Abstract Art: You don’t need to be an artist to create art. Embrace the process and let go of the need for perfection.
  4. Learn from Successful Individuals: Surround yourself with content from those who excel in areas you aspire to. Observe their strategies and adapt them to your journey.
  5. Join a Toastmasters Club: Participating in Toastmasters can significantly enhance your public speaking and presentation skills, boosting your self-expression.
  6. Seek Professional Guidance: Consider hiring a coach or therapist to help you navigate any barriers to your authentic self-expression. Many professionals offer online sessions, making it easier to find support.
