Creative Resolutions for 2024: Embracing the Unexpected
Written on
Chapter 1: The Search for Inspiration
Navigating the internet for visual inspiration can be a double-edged sword for me. While browsing through various creative blogs and websites, I often find myself hitting a dead end. However, when I'm in urgent need of specific references, that's when inspiration tends to flow.
This isn't merely luck; it's a reflection of my focused mindset. As the saying goes, "If you seek out negativity, you'll surely find it… whereas choosing gratitude can shift your perspective."
After spending much of December feeling uninspired by AI-generated "art," I found my creative well nearly dry — despite my efforts to refill it. Just last week, during a design review, I was tasked with finding unique packaging examples that utilized color to distinguish between products. Interestingly, once I zeroed in on this particular topic, a flood of ideas rushed in.
The simple act of clarifying what I wanted to be inspired by proved to be the key to unlocking a myriad of creative concepts. This approach, while seemingly straightforward for identifying interesting packaging, can also be applied to one's professional growth as a designer. Think of it as a method of setting creative objectives — the only productivity strategy I genuinely embrace.
Chapter 2: Fostering Change Through Creative Resolutions
Since 2019, I have been crafting New Year’s “Creative Resolutions” as visual goals for my work in the upcoming year. Unlike my usual resolutions (like reducing my swearing or surfing more frequently), this practice has proven to be a significant catalyst for personal growth and has substantially influenced my development as a visual designer.
This method serves as a remedy for monotony, pushing me to embrace uncertainty. The key to its effectiveness mirrors that of seeking inspiration — when one's focus is directed toward a specific goal, it becomes a priority.
As I coach individuals during this time of year, I often pose this question: what creative challenges do you wish to tackle in 2024? Here are my resolutions for this year:
#1. Embrace the Absurd
After delivering a presentation on creativity in startups, I concluded that “software is dull.” It seems that designers often prioritize functional excellence (think flawless UX and intuitive UI) as the ultimate goal. I believe these elements are merely the foundation of memorable design. Once established, there's ample opportunity to introduce fun, quirky, and surprising elements into our work.
Sarah Drasner’s insights on this topic resonate deeply, emphasizing that the web should adopt a lighter approach! I hope that 2024 sees more creative discussions ending with “because it’s enjoyable” rather than convoluted justifications about how the best design is no design.
#2. Take Bold Risks
In my role, I collaborate with teams within larger organizations that emphasize rapid delivery. While I appreciate this structure, it often leads me to limit my work to small, quantifiable results. Honestly, I tend to play it safe.
I admire Katie M. Dill’s approach to Iterative Design, yet I recognize that to make a significant impact on the teams, businesses, and clients I serve, I must embrace the discomfort that comes with ambitious ideas. I can always iterate later.
#3. Cultivate Creative Space
This resolution may tie into my desire to embrace the absurd, but I believe creativity is a mindset that requires ongoing nurturing. To grow my own work and encourage others in 2024, I need to create space for exploration, allow for messiness, and break free from the confines of current trends.
I feel this is a promising beginning.
In this video, titled "My Creative Resolutions in 2024," I share my personal journey of setting creative goals and the impact they have on my work.
