James Howard Goodnight is a prominent American billionaire and software innovator. Since co-founding SAS Institute in 1976, he has served as the company's CEO. His entrepreneurial journey began in Salisbury, North Carolina, where he was born on January 6, 1943, to Albert Goodnight and Dorothy Patterson. At just 12 years old, he began working in his father's hardware store, which instilled in him a strong work ethic.

Goodnight earned his master's and Ph.D. in Statistics from North Carolina State University, graduating in 1968.
